Roger Amar of France has developed a procedure to reduce the signs of aging which does not require any incisions. I think this procedure is revolutionary. Unfortunately in our culture of immediate gratification it is not a frequently chosen procedure and not many surgeons are even aware that it exists. Dr. Amar has chosen not to publish any papers about it in the English language. Because there is some swelling for 3 weeks to 3 months, not many patients choose to undergo the procedure in this country.

One of the principle changes that occurs with aging of the face is a loss of volume. This occurs in all areas including the fat pads of the face. Fat grafting works, but the take or vascularization is unpredictable. You can also have bumpy results. Dr. Amar has taken a different approach to correcting these negative changes.

Perhaps the easiest way to explain how it works is to explain how it is done and give a side bar as to why it probably works.

Fat is harvested like one is having a routine liposuction. This fat is then centrifuged at about 100 G's. What is obtained is a layer of water, oil, and the primitive connective tissue that gave structure to the fat. The connective tissue is injected along the facial muscles and into the facial fat pads. The pictures of his patients speak for themselves.

At the time of this writing I am waiting for my first patient who would like to under go this procedure.

It has been shown that 2.5 cc of fat when treated as above will plate out 1,200,000 viable stem cells. Is this part of why this procedure give such astounding results? If so, why not inject it into worn out joints and other tissue that is wearing out? I think at some future time this procedure will be used for many other applications besides the aging face.
